Fire Department

Most young men and women take on a second job because it's necessary for their financial situation. Tom Starr, however, looked to join the Winnipeg Fire Department because he wanted to.

Firefighters were frequent customers of Tom's, always visiting the 'Sals' at Princess and Hargrave. At the time, he was taking home $60 per week for his work in the restaurant chain. While discussing the job of a WFD employee, Tom discovered they took home $296 a week, almost five times what he was currently making. He couldn't make it to a firehall fast enough to turn in his application, where he was hired immediately.

For the next 42 years, Tom pulled double duty as a full time firefighter and a part time Sals server. He retired from the WFD in 1994 at the age of 63, after climbing the ranks over the years to hold the title of District Chief.
